Teaching Vocabulary

                                             
These materies were summaried when I had joined bimtek pengembangan kurikulum SMP 2015 on SHANG RATU HOTEL, JAMBI. Thankfull for Mrs. Yahmawati, M.Hum who gave the vocabulary matery at that time.

TEACHING VOCABULARY
In teaching vocabulary, directly we teach about grammar, whether it’s about article, countable and uncountable noun, and so on.
HOW DO YOU TEACH VOCABULARY TO YOUR STUDENTS?

  • By choosing or deciding the words that the students will find in a text.
  • By matching the words and their meanings
  • By asking the students fill the blanks in an exercise
WHAT ACTIVITIES DO YOU GIVE TO YOUR STUDENTS IN ENLARGING THE VOCABULARY?
  • We ask the students to find or memorize a number of words related to a certain topic.

WHICH WORD THAT YOU GIVE TO THE STUDENTS?
  • We give the words that they are going to use/find in a text that they need based on the topic that they are going to learn or talk later.
These are some of lexical  relation activities that the teacher can use to enlarge the students' vocabulary:
  1. MEMBER COLLECTION
  2. OPPOSITE/ANTONYMY
  3. HYPONYMY
  4. PORTION MASS
  5. HOMONYMY
  6. MERONYMY

The Explanations:
1. The Member Collection is a relationship between the world for a unit and the usual  word for     a      collection of the units. (Kelompok kata yang fungsinya sama)
    examples:
  •           ship                     fleet
  •           tree                     forest
  •           fish                     shoal
  •           book                   library
  •           bird                     flock
  •           sheep                 flock
  •           worshipper         congregation

2.  A. The Opposite/Antonymy is words which are opposite in meaning.
           example: 
           HEAD ---- TAIL
         (here are some instructions for giving the antonymy test: 1. MATCH THE ANTONYMY WORDS IN COLUMN A WITH THE ONE IN COLUMN B!, 2.FIND THE ANTONYMY WORDS FROM COLUMN A WITH THE ONE IN COLUMN B! , 3. FIND THE ANTONYMY WORDS IN COLUMN  A WITH THE CORRECT ONE IN COLUMN B!
    B. The Synonymy is words which have the same or very similar meanings.
         example:
         HEADED TO THE BUS STOP
         headed  = proceeded
3. The Hyponymy is words which are relation of inclusion. A hyponymy includes the meaning of a more general meaning.
    example :
   HEAD = 
  • chin
  • ears
  • eyes
  • nose
  • lips, so on.
4. The Portion Mass is tthe relation between a mass noun and the usual unit of measurement or             division.  
    example: 
  • drop        of        liquid
  • Grain       of       salt/sand/wheat
  • Sheet       of       paper
  • lump        of       coal
  • strand     of        hair
5. The Homonymy is the word has any different meaning.
    example :
    Read the text below!
Irina was fast asleep when the alarm went off. She opened her eyes with difficulty. Her head was throbbing- she had a headache; but she still had to get ready to teach at her school. After she had finished breakfast, she put on her coat and headed to the bus stop. When she got to the staffroom, she found that all the other teachers were having a meeting about Svatislav Melaschenko, the new head of the school. They were unhappy about him because (Vladimir said) his new power had gone to his head. He wouldn’t listen anymore. He had become very pig-headed. Should they go and talk to him about it, they wondered. In the end, Vladimir tossed a coin – heads or tails (heads = we go to see him, tails = we forget about it) – and it was heads. They decided that they would all go and see him during the lunch break. Irina didn’t want to be part of this so she tried to keep her head down, but in spite of this she somehow found hersefl at the head of the little procession as they marched down the corridor towards Mr. Melaschenko’s office.
   
What does head mean ?
her head  was throbbling__ part of the body
... And headed to the bus stop__ go towards
power had gone to his head  __made him feel more important than necessary ( idiom ) head or tail
trying to keep her head down = she didn’t want people to notice her.( idiom )

6. The Meronymy is a term used to describe a part –whole relationship between lexical items.
     example: 
     CAR = 
  • wheel
  • engine = piston, valve, etc.
  • door
  • window
  • etc.

Berdasarkan kepercayaan pemerintah dan dinas ke pendidikan Tanah datar  bahwa sekolah SMPN 2 Sungai Penuh layanan ke unggulan yang mempunyai visi dan misi mengembangkan generasi cemerlang berdasarkan iptek dan imtaq yang juga untuk menyingkapi masa globalisasi maka kami merasa perlu untuk menngadakan extracurri

The Legend of Calon Arang

This was one of my student's assignment when I taught writing skill. I asked my students to rewrite "the legend of Calon Arang" into storytelling. Enjoy yourself! THE LEGEND OF CALON ARANG Long time ago in Girah Village there lived an old woman. Her name was Calonarang. She had magical power. Calonarang had a daughter. Her name was Ratna Mangali. She was very beautiful. Yet, nobody wanted to marry her because they were afraid of her mother. People began to talk about Ratna Mangali. The People             : Hy,Ratna do you know why you have not a husband ? Ratna                     : No,why ? The People             : Because,your mother is black angel..                                 So poor you are Ratna ! Every one like you but they are afraid with your mother ! ( Ratna feel sad when she hear that,than Calon Arang is coming ) Calon Arang          : Hy,shut up !                                  Don’t ever contemptuous my daughter,, The People
